A little unexpected surprise…
On Saturday, Stu did the usual convenience store run. Instead of my usual plea for a specific chocolate bar, I just said "something sweet and nut-less." He came back to me with a tube of Rolos. I’m not a fan of Rolos, but since Caramilk is my other favorite, Rolo is pretty darn close.
I opened the wrapper and SCREAMED AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS. Up bounced the chocolate bar and it landed on the coffee table.
Stu exclaimed…"uh, what’s wrong?"
"THERE’S A MAGGOT IN MY CHOCOLATE BAR!" And on the coffee table, crawling, there it was. It was quite alive. The Rolo bar sits on the floor near it.
Stu then proceeded to put the maggot back into the bar and subsequently squishing it with the wrapper. So, what to do with a maggot-ed chocolate bar? I don’t know. Call public health? Likely. Why would a maggot be in a chocolate bar? Don’t they only eat rotting flesh? How desperate is this maggot to hatch in a Rolo bar? Now, what if I had opened the other end, eaten all the Rolo pieces, then to reach for the last one to find a maggot crawling on it? I shudder to think. Yuck.
From this day on, I’m only having chocolate if it’s factory sealed. None of this foil-wrapped stuff for me anymore.

Eww. Maggots. You were really lucky you didnt’t open from the other end. Do you plan to sue/report this?

Definitely plan to report this to public health. They also sell bread, milk, eggs and some other perishable stuff, and if someone else gets sick from eating stuff bought from them I’d kinda feel responsible.

For Heaven’s Sake, please email the Rolo people now.
If it got in at the factory, you may be in for an unpleasant bonus under the plastic blister package, too.

Well you should. But I doubt if it was the factory’s fault. Maggots don’t have a long life span, and it takes quite some time from the factory to the retailer. I just hope it doesn’t happen to me and my Reese’s peanut butter cups.

You are most likely correct.
I beg to respectfully differ.
In my opinion, maggots lack the necessary equipment and energy to penetrate the wrapper whether at the store, on the truck, or at the warehouse.
What I think happened is that eggs introduced onto the candy from the factory hatched and became what was revealed when you made your unpleasant discovery.
One of my gigs in 1979 was process engineering at a sausage factory at Johnson and Johnson (one source of 腸臘 lop cheung).
Let’s just say you probably don’t want to know how most food gets to you, and leave it right there.
I was a much happier person before I ever saw that plant.
Can’t we just move onto another recipe?

Don’t tell me. I LOVE lop cheung.
Sticky rice, lop cheung, lop yok, green onions, soy sauce, fried egg - heaven.

You are making me all hot.

What are your feelings regarding lop op?

I have a quite similar experience.. I bought cola from 7eleven and after finishing more than half, I realized that the brown thing beneath the lid was not cola at all but a full grown cockroach. YUCK. I email 7eleven but there came no response… I also dont know what to do.

Call those Made Members of Organized Crime at Coca-Cola. They will take prompt action, believe me.

lop OP?
Upon second glance, I’m guessing you mean salted duck. Love salted duck. Lop op bai, I guess you would mean, also.
My grandma used to put that on a plate and place it in the rice cooker on top of the rice to cook. Gee that brings back memories.

Bai, yik, mai; there’s no part I leave unsavored. I guess we say it more like “ngop.”
Good Lord, I’m drooling…
