So, we’ve moved in and all, but…
The place is still one giantic mess.
I guess it’s the same everytime you move - for the first few weeks (if not months) you’ll still be living out of boxes and wondering where all the pens went. The only completely functional space in the apartment is the kitchen. The second would be the bathroom. Our bedroom has no storage whatsoever at the moment (we broke the dresser in the move) and we’re living out of these big bags on the floor.
I love my place though. Things to love:
- It’s in a lovely neighbourhood by the lake. 100 yards from a huge park. 5 minute walk to the water. It’s beautiful.
- We’re close to a traffic pitstop in the city - so technically, you can get anywhere from here.
- We’re far enough away from downtown that we never hear any sirens.
- The kitchen has great appliances for an apartment. The stove heats up right away, and it’s a huge fridge.
- The rent is CHEAP. $850 for a 2-bedroom? Woooo.
- The AC doesn’t need to be on even on a hot humid day, since we’re so close to the water…
- …and the apartment itself is perfect sized for the two of us.
Things to NOT love about the apartment:
- 2 bedrooms. 3 VERY VERY SMALL closets.
- The kitchen has 2 panels of countertops only, and a single sink. There’s NO ROOM.
- The kitchen cabinets are painted neon MINT. And there are so many coats of paint on them that some of them won’t close.
- The bathroom is the size of my old storage closet. And it has no storage.
- The bedrooms are carpeted in psychedelic patterns of brown and orange.
- All the caulking in the bathroom is old and needs replacing.
- The water system is OLD. When someone flushes the toilet NEXT DOOR my shower water runs hotter.
I still like it.
Tonight, we’re hitting Ikea. Hopefully, we’ll find ourselves enough storage for the bedroom, the living room and the second bedroom. Hopefully, we’d also find a kitchen trolley that gives me a bit more counterspace to cook with. Wish me luck!

Best of luck, though it seems you are busily going around making your own luck, Sweet Sally.
Back from Hong Kong, thanks for your recommendations.
No “pizza” tasted there, but Roast Goose, and sour plum pai gwut, dim sum, and soups I shall dream of tonight.

haven’t read your blog in a while…
neon mint green!? Suddenly I feel better about the mushroom and watermelon tones our house was when we bought it. Any way the landlord might let you redecorate? Paint’s cheap and goes a long way! Moving always stinks, by the way. You always remember where you put something in your old place but it drives you mad that you can’t find it now!
Take care,
Ginny in MA

I was gonna write something about how I think I might enjoy living near a lake until I read the comments and Gerry said something about roast goose and plum sauce. Now I can’t get my mind off of it. Mmmm… roast goose…

The roast goose was terrific.
I did dream about it last night.
My home in New Jersey is on a lake.
My wife (who is college-educated) had the place feng-shuied by a fortuneteller.
If I correctly understood her (my Mandarin is spectacularly awful), I think water is “female” which translates that the house (specifically, the lake we live on) is very, very bad for my wife and three daughters.
But really good for me and our ancient tom-cat.
We enjoy the veritable parade of wildlife through our yard, a blue heron, the black bears, deer, rabbits, groundhogs, swans, ducks, and geese.
I haven’t yet been tempted to actually try to eat one of those, though…

on life we seldom find a true person and
if you ever find one hold on and never let go value that person coz it life worth…
True friends are the people that are there for you unconditionally.
They are the people that never question you and support you no
matter what the circumstances are. They are the people worth
living for.. and thank you, you are one of them…and giving is the
secret of a healthy life.
Not necessarily money, but whatever
a person has of encouragement,
sympathy and understanding…
July 12th, 2006 at 12:24 pm
We managed to get EVERYTHING that was on my list: a kitchen trolley, a huge set of wooden shelves, a coffee table, and a step-stool for my WAY TOO HIGH kitchen cabinets.
Hopefully, by end of tomorrow everything would be packed and put away. (Well, one can always hope…)
Mmmm. Roast goose. I’m going down to chinatown tonight. Roast goose is in season right now. Guess what I’m having for dinner? (I know. It’s not the same as HK’s roast goose…)
July 12th, 2006 at 12:25 pm
Ginny/ if I put any more paint on the cabinets, they’d just stay open. That’s the sad part - they’re already saturated in so much paint you can’t paint them over anymore.

May be time for “better living through chemistry” and Zip-Strip, the homeowner’s friend paint remover. One can also get a very nice buzz if one leaves the windows closed. Too bad it may no longer be legal or environmentally conscientious.
My late Dad taught me that (you should pardon the expression) duw fu yu 乳腐豆 was the secret ingredient in making roast fowl. I’ve done this with duck, and the results were amazing.

hi sally you are very beautiful. i like your character. anbudan jk
July 12th, 2006 at 5:27 pm
I’m still craving for roast goose. That’s 2 days since you posted this, and the closest thing I’ve had to roast goose is fried chicken. Sucks huh? Sally, do you have a roast goose recipe? If you do, you mind if you post it? The nearest Chinatown from where I live here in Tokyo is about a couple of hours away on a jam-packed train in Yokohama, but there’s gotta be one nearer, right (I mean, there has to be)? Slightly crisp skin, succulent, tender, juicy meat, sweet plum sauce and rice. Tough to beat that combo.
July 12th, 2006 at 5:37 pm
PS.
I just did a google search on “chinatown tokyo” and I wasn’t able to find one nearer than Yokohama. I just don’t trust the Chinese restaurants here that aren’t in Chinatown to give me “authentic” Chinese food.

so beauty site i aprishate u did u do friendship with me?
July 13th, 2006 at 6:41 am
Paulo/ sadly, no, I don’t have a recipe for roast goose. Mainly because there isn’t really a ready retail supplier for goose in Toronto. You can’t get it in super markets, and all you can get at Bruno’s is foie gras.
It’s a rare thing when I can land a duck breast at the butchers nowadays.
The sad thing is, we have duck farms in Ontario!
Here in TO we only get goose in the summer. BTW, my bf just described the goose last night as a “lean duck.” So if you’re really craving it BADLY, find yourself a duck and cut the grease out before you roast it…
July 13th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
I use an enormous roasting pan.
The last 9 pound duck I roasted (rubbing it with the aforementioned fu yu fermented bean curd, honey, soy sauce, scallion and ginger) yielded something like a gallon of duck grease after what appeared to be a month in the oven at 375°F.
If my missus hadn’t been watching me like a hawk, I might have just guzzled it all down. I was very hungry by the time it was done.

Someone mentioned feng shui. To me, feng shui is the “real” stuff…for example, you mentioned not having to run the AC due to proximity to the lake. Our beautiful house has “good energy” like that, too. I often sunbathe during the bitter cold of winters here, due to enormous southern windows; in the summer the tall tree canopy has leafed out to provide shade. Good luck indeed Sally, sounds like a good choice for you guys. orange and brown…classic, heh heh
